Prizes up for grabs at next year’s Band Cymru con­test

S4C have an­nounced that Band Cymru will again take place next year and is open to brass, wind and jazz bands.

All bands will be re­quired to per­form an en­ter­tain­ing pro­gramme to the high­est standard of pre­sen­ta­tion. This will be a unique op­por­tu­nity for tele­vi­sion au­di­enes to en­joy the very best in Welsh bands. As with last year, the com­pe­ti­tion is or­gan­ised by Rondo and the semi-fi­nal and fi­nal will be broad­cast on S4C.

Fol­low­ing a se­ries of au­di­tions across Wales, 12 bands will be in­vited to ap­pear at the Aberys­t­wyth Arts Cen­tre dur­ing the week­end of Fe­bru­ary 17-18, 2018.

There is a prize for the best soloist who will be cho­sen dur­ing the semi­fi­nal and re­ceive £500 and an in­vite to play at the fi­nal. A sep­a­rate prize will be awarded for the best­p­re­sented piece on stage through­out the com­pe­ti­tion and the win­ner of this award will re­ceive an ad­di­tional prize of £2,000.

The fi­nal­ists in 2016 were The Royal Welsh Col­lege of Mu­sic and Drama Brass Band, Beau­maris Brass, City of Cardiff (Mel­in­grif­fith) brass band and 2016 Band Cymru win­ners Tre­de­gar Town Band, who will not be al­lowed to com­pete in the 2018 con­test.

The Best Soloist was Eb Tenor Horn player Lowenna Taylor of City of Cardiff (Mel­in­grif­fith) band. The 2016 Fi­nal of the Band Cymru com­pe­ti­tion has been nom­i­nated for a Bri­tish Acad­emy Cymru Award.

Fol­low­ing the suc­cess of Band Ieuenc­tid Cymru in 2016, S4C have an­nounced that the con­test for Youth Brass, Wind and Jazz Bands with play­ers aged 18 and un­der on Au­gust 31 next year will take place next year with the Fi­nal show­ing four bands be­ing tele­vised on Satur­day, April 21, at the Great Hall, Swansea Uni­ver­sity.

There is a top prize of £1,000 and each band that reaches the fi­nal will re­ceive £250.

The com­pe­ti­tion is or­gan­ised by Rondo and the clos­ing date for en­tries is next month on Oc­to­ber 6.
