Prizes up for grabs at next year’s Band Cymru contest
S4C have announced that Band Cymru will again take place next year and is open to brass, wind and jazz bands.
All bands will be required to perform an entertaining programme to the highest standard of presentation. This will be a unique opportunity for television audienes to enjoy the very best in Welsh bands. As with last year, the competition is organised by Rondo and the semi-final and final will be broadcast on S4C.
Following a series of auditions across Wales, 12 bands will be invited to appear at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre during the weekend of February 17-18, 2018.
There is a prize for the best soloist who will be chosen during the semifinal and receive £500 and an invite to play at the final. A separate prize will be awarded for the bestpresented piece on stage throughout the competition and the winner of this award will receive an additional prize of £2,000.
The finalists in 2016 were The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Brass Band, Beaumaris Brass, City of Cardiff (Melingriffith) brass band and 2016 Band Cymru winners Tredegar Town Band, who will not be allowed to compete in the 2018 contest.
The Best Soloist was Eb Tenor Horn player Lowenna Taylor of City of Cardiff (Melingriffith) band. The 2016 Final of the Band Cymru competition has been nominated for a British Academy Cymru Award.
Following the success of Band Ieuenctid Cymru in 2016, S4C have announced that the contest for Youth Brass, Wind and Jazz Bands with players aged 18 and under on August 31 next year will take place next year with the Final showing four bands being televised on Saturday, April 21, at the Great Hall, Swansea University.
There is a top prize of £1,000 and each band that reaches the final will receive £250.
The competition is organised by Rondo and the closing date for entries is next month on October 6.
