HIS­TO­RIAN Lucy Wors­ley vis­its the Euro­pean cities where some of the most fa­mous op­eras were writ­ten, ex­plor­ing the lives of the com­posers and look­ing at how the works re­flected their tur­bu­lent times.

Wors­ley be­gins with four land­mark op­eras writ­ten in Europe be­tween the 17th and 19th cen­turies by Mon­teverdi, Mozart, Beethoven and Verdi. In part two, Wors­ley ex­plores 19th and early 20th-cen­tury opera, and in­ves­ti­gates the im­pact one of the genre’s most con­tro­ver­sial com­posers – Wag­ner.
