Cory Band win best CD prize

THE Brass Band pro­gramme on the BBC pre­sented by Frank Ren­ton has awarded the Best Brass Band CD for 2017 “Sto­ry­teller” to the Cory Band, con­ducted by Philip Harper, and the award for the Best Solo CD goes to Steve Ste­wart, Cory’s Prin­ci­pal So­prano Cor­net player, for his “Over the Hori­zon”.

Cory were also of­fi­cially ranked the num­ber one brass band in the world for the 11th con­sec­u­tive year. What a tremen­dous achieve­ment!

The West Wales Solo & Ensem­ble Day (WWSED) takes place on Satur­day, Jan­uary 27, at the Memo- rial Hall, Burry Port, and starts at 10am, with the Youth Band Classes, fol­lowed by the Solo, Duet, Trio and En­sem­bles.

Clos­ing date for en­tries is Jan­uary 20. Ev­ery en­trant will re­ceive an award which will be ranked as Gold, Sil­ver, Bronze or Highly Rec­om­mended. Re­stricted ages for classes are Un­der 15 years, Un­der 19 and Un­der 22 for Youth Bands, Un­der 11yrs, U13yrs, U15yrs, U17yrs, U19yrs and Open for Solo Sec­tions. Un­der 15 yrs and Open for Duets or Trios. Un­der 15 years, U20yrs and Open for En­sem­bles.

The Welsh Open En­ter­tain­ment Con­test takes place on Fe­bru­ary 17, 2018, at the Grand Pav­il­ion, Porth­cawl. To date there are 11 en­tries and there is a limit of 16 com­peti­tors.

The clos­ing date for en­tries is Jan­uary 6. This will be the 21st oc­ca­sion at the Grand Pav­il­ion and it will al­ways evoke mem­o­ries of the day that Paul Robe­son spoke to the min­ers via the trans At­lantic ca­ble from Amer­ica as he had been pre­vented from at­tend­ing their Eisteddfod by the Amer­i­can Gov­ern­ment.

The present con­test be­gan as the Min­ers’ En­ter­tain­ment Cham­pi­onships and was ini­tially held over two days with five band sec­tions tak­ing part. Due to fi­nan­cial rea­sons it was cur­tailed to one day and re­duced to one con­test which com­bined Cham­pi­onship and First Sec­tion bands, with the high­est First Sec­tion band re­ceiv­ing a prize.

The con­test starts at noon and doors will be open at 11.30am.

Since Novem­ber 5, au­di­tions have been tak­ing place across Wales by Rondo for the Band Cymru brass band com­pe­ti­tion which will be tele­vised on S4C.

Twelve bands have been se­lected to take part in the semi-fi­nals of the com­pe­ti­tion and they will be di­vided into four ses­sions for four tele­vi­sion pro­grammes and there will be a win­ner at the end of each tele­vi­sion pro­gramme. How­ever, win­ning does not guar­an­tee a place in the fi­nal.

A panel of judges will choose four bands to pro­ceed to the fi­nal which tales place at the Great Hall, Swansea Univer­sity, on Sun­day, April 22, 2018. The over­all win­ner will re­ceive £7,000.
