AVAFL DIVISION ONE
AFC ABERCYNON ........ 2 ABERDARE TOWN ........ 6
THIS Division One clash saw league leaders and reigning champions Aberdare Town thrash AFC Abercynon at Pentwyn Fields to firmly tighten their grip at the top of the table.
Indeed, the visitors established an early lead when AFC failed to clear their lines after a throw-in down the right.
And minutes later Aberdare doubled their advantage courtesy of a neat finish.
With their tails up Town continued to press and on 25 minutes they further expanded the scoreline to make in 0-3.
Just then, AFC finally clicked into gear and recent signing Harri Lloyd almost reduced the arrears on the half hour. But his well-struck effort cleared the Town crossbar after some great approach work from Martin Bewick and Trevor Harris.
Not to be denied, the striker made amends shortly after when he rammed home the loose ball to give his side an unlikely life-line following another impressive passage of play.
And five minutes before the break the home side scored again with Lloyd once more heavily involved as his shot came back into play off the post. Martin Bewick, with his first goal in a red and black shirt, then fired in the rebound from close range to offer more hope before match official Neil Mansell signalled for halftime.
As the second half got under way, Abercynon looked to restore parity but Aberdare proved a tough nut to crack.
Indeed, the visitors again found the net on 55 minutes after yet another defensive lapse and this proved to be decisive as the second half gathered momentum.
Just after the hour mark the home side were awarded a penalty after Aberdare skipper Jody Jones felled Trevor Harris inside the six-yard area and the referee had no hesitation in awarding the spot kick.
Josh Williams stepped up to the plate but the visitors’ custodian produced an excellent save to maintain his side’s lead.
Indeed, two late strikes from the visitors added further gloss to the scoreline to confirm all three points for Aberdare.
