Young players to shine at European festival
THE European Brass Band Championships are an integral part of a European Festival of Brass covering events for soloists, conductors and various standards of brass bands.
The European Youth Brass Band is composed of the best young players in Europe and has 35 players.
The Youth band give concerts almost daily throughout the period of the festival and work very hard. Among these excellent players are two from Wales, namely Catrin Nicholas on cornet and Lewis Rees on E-flat tuba.
Utrecht will host 12 of the very best bands in Europe on May 4 and 5.
Each of the following countries will be represented by its champion band: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, France and Switzerland. From the UK we have the Fairey Band – conducted by Garry Cutt from England; Whitburn – conducted by Welshman Professor Nicholas Childs from Scotland; and Cory, conducted by Philip Harper, from Wales.
Norway has two representatives as EikangerBjorsvik Musikklag are back to defend their 2017 European Champions title. There is a European Youth Brass Band Championship which is divided into the Development Section of four bands from Lithuania, Norway and two bands from England, and the Premier Section of five bands from Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, England and Beaumaris Youth Brass Band from north Wales conducted by Gwyn M Evans. KAYLEIGH Lewis, who is 11 years old and attends Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Ynyswen, became the proud winner of the Treorchy Male Voice Choir Junior Musician of The Year and she will be the guest soloist with Parc & Dare Band (Left Field Environmental Ltd) at the Parc & Dare Theatre on Good Friday.
She will play the tenor horn solo Can You Feel The Love Tonight? from The Lion King.
The concert starts at 7pm and Treorchy Male Voice Choir will also be appearing.
