Bonus point for Pontyclun
PONTYCLUN RFC 1ST XV ................................ 33 LLANDAFF RFC 1ST XV ....................................... 24
GOING into this game, Pontyclun would have expected a bonus point victory against a Llandaff side with just one win to their name all season. And despite a few minor scares late on, that is exactly what was achieved.
This was only the Badgers second game since January, but they started brightly and a classical move from a line-out saw Jo Williams pierce the defence and put in wing Sam Davies to score near to the posts.
Nicky Theaker had no problem adding the conversion.
The visitors though hit back via a penalty from Jordan Gammon before Pontyclun notched another try.
This time it was winger Davies the provider, skinning two defenders wide out and sending over Nicky Theaker for an easy touchdown.
Theaker was once again successful in adding the extras and Pontyclun led 14pts-3.
Following a sustained period of pressure Pontyclun increased their lead and Rhys Morgan split the Llandaff defensive line to score and once again provide Theaker with a simple conversion. However from the restart Llandaff hit back.
Jack Theaker caught the restart kick and made twenty metres upfield but the ball was ripped from him in the tackle by Llandaff Captain David Hugo and he evaded several defenders before touching down. Gammon converted.
That was the end of the first half scoring and Pontyclun entered the break looking for a repeat of their first half dominance.
They made the perfect start when Jack Theaker crashed over for their fourth and bonus point try with again Nicky Theaker converting.
Minutes later Rhys Morgan grabbed his second, and Pontyclun’s fifth try, crossing wide out on the left.
Llandaff then came more into the game and started causing problems with some enterprising attacking moves.
Pontyclun then made a few changes in personnel and this, coupled with two yellow cards issued to Nicky Theaker and Tom Green, gave Llandaff impetus going in to the last ten minutes.
They scored two tries during this period, a second from their skipper Hugo and another courtesy of Ron Mbakwe. Both were converted by Gammon to make the final score 33pts-24pts.
Pontyclun made it four wins on the bounce and continue to climb the league.
Post match the MOM awards were presented by match sponsors Coors to David Hugo (Llandaff ) and Sam ‘Twinkle Toes” Davies for Pontyclun.
Pontyclun have a midweek match on Wednesday, March 28 when they entertain Treharris at the Windsor field (ko 6.15pm). They then are without a game on Saturday, March 31 before travelling to Pentyrch on Saturday, April 7.
