LEAGUE CUP ROUND ONE AFC ABERCYNON ........ 2 GURNOS FC ................... 3

Y PARC provided the backdrop as AFC Abercynon hosted Gurnos FC in this Aberdare/Merthyr League Cup first round clash.

It was the visitors who came out of the blocks at full speed in an effort to establish an early lead.

Indeed, they bossed the game during the opening exchanges and almost found themselves in front with only four minutes on the clock.

But match official Carwyn Speck chalked the goal off for offside. Stung, AFC promptly found the net themselves a minute later. But again the referee was well positioned to disallow the goal for another offside.

However, the opening goal soon arrived when inform striker Kevin Hughes latched on to skipper Trevor Harris’ perfectly weighted through ball.

Hughes then took his shot early and beat the Gurnos keeper with an outstanding 20-yard drive.

AFC then moved up through the gears and began to assert themselves on the game following the opening strike.

The visitors then caught the men in red and black cold when they fashioned an equaliser on 25 minutes when they capitalised on an uncharacteristic error from keeper Matthew Griffiths.

Undeterred, the home side continued to press and just after the half hour they won a free kick 30-yards from the Gurnos goal.

Left back Gavin Engelhardt stepped up and unleashed a ferocious drive and took a wicked deflection before crashing into the net to make it 2 – 1.

As the half drew to a close the visitors once again gained the upper hand and their determination was richly rewarded just before the break when the fashioned an outstanding goal to restore parity.

After the turn around both sides came out full of energy but it was AFC who plundered the next goal on 55 minutes when Kevin Hughes pounced to fire home his 20th goal of the season.
