Heroin dealer jailed after raid
DRUG dealer Matthew Read has been jailed after police officers found £2,500 of heroin at his home in Penywaun.
A DRUG dealer from Penywaun has been jailed after police officers found £2,500 worth of heroin at his home.
Cynon Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) executed a warrant at the home of Matthew Read on February 9 this year.
During the raid, officers discovered heroin worth in the region of £2,500 as well as thousands of pounds in cash.
Read, 38, was arrested following the find and was charged with a number of offences following an investigation by the Priority Policing Team.
Officers were sent to the property, at Heol Bryn Gwyn, Penywaun, after being given information by the local community.
On Tuesday, March 27, Read pleaded guilty to possessing heroin with the intent to supply and to possession of criminal property at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court.
He was jailed for a total of six years.
Following the sentencing, Local Policing Inspector, Rob Blunt, said: “This conviction was the result of excellent joint work between the local Neighbourhood Team in Cynon to gather information and take action, and a thorough investigation by the Northern Division priority policing team.
“We want our communities to be free of drug dealers and the problems that drug dealing brings to our area.
“This significant sentence should serve as a strong message to those who supply drugs in the Cynon Valley that South Wales Police will not tolerate drug dealing, while also demonstrating to the community that they should have confidence that we will act on intelligence received.
“Our NPT has recently carried out Operation Perception in the Cynon Valley, where we sought the views of the local community about the issues which matter most to them.
“In Penywaun, drug dealing and drug use was in the top three concerns, so I hope this latest conviction also serves to demonstrate that tackling illegal drug use is also a priority for us, and that we are committed to stamping it out.”
