Zips, frayed denim and high fashion
IN THE fashion pages this week I learn that Whistles’ fashionably frayed jeans come complete with turn-up lines. Remember those? When you were little, your trouser hems were first put up and then turned down as you grew into them. When they were turned down there was always that pale giveaway line and an ineradicable crease.
Frayed denim has long been a fashion staple, intended to make the wearer look like a free spirit. And then there are zips. When I was taught dressmaking zips were always concealed and learning how to do this was quite a business. Now zips, gleaming teeth all visible, are often plonked on a garment with no attempt at concealment. It looks quite good, but I always find myself wondering whether it is a cop out cunningly disguised as high fashion because it is easier and quicker than sewing a zip in properly.
