Batty’s alive and kicking

-

Worcestershire all-rounder also starred with the ball, taking two wickets in his first five deliveries just before lunch to have Bangladesh wobbling on 29-2.

England went through 13 overs of Bangladesh’s reply without a breakthrough.

But Moeen conjured up a magic delivery to bowl Imrul Kayes before striking three balls later to have Monimul Haque caught at gully by Stokes.

Tamim was dropped on 28 by Adil Rashid at point off Moeen, proving England’s man of the moment was not immune to bad fortune. The Bangladesh opener then went on to register his 19th Test half-century as he guided his side past 100 during a 90-run stand with Mahmudullah.

Rashid partially made up for his earlier drop when he broke that stand thanks to a fine catch by Joe Root at slip that dismissed Mahmudullah and sent Bangladesh into tea on 119-3.

In the final session, Tamim picked up where he left off to take his side’s total past 150. However, Batty then struck to remove the dangerman, kick-start England’s resistance and reduce Bangladesh to 163-4. Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur then combined to put on another half-century stand. Stokes, though, broke that late in the day to keep this contest on a knife-edge.

England, who were 258-7 overnight, lost Chris Woakes to the first ball of the day as he fended off-spinner Taijul Islam to short leg.

Rashid and Stuart Broad added 31 for the ninth wicket as England closed in on 300. But they fell just short when Broad was dismissed on review by Mehedi Hasan, the 18-year-old spinner who finished with 6-80, the best figures by a Bangladesh bowler on debut.

That was one of 10 reviews in the innings – a Test record.
