Turning classic television sitcoms into big-screen blockbusters has often proved a poisoned chalice for the experts left in charge. Fortunately, director Oliver Parker just about serves up enough gags to pull this one off.

A stellar cast, including Bill Nighy, Toby Jones, Blake Harrison and Michael Gambon, take on the classic characters as the officious Captain Mainwaring is forced to try to maintain the reputation and morale of his troops once the Second World War draws to a close.

However, things soon get complicated after he finds himself on the hunt for a German spy as well as a female journalist sent to report on their various exploits.
