Health alert as 95F heatwave hits Britain
BRITAIN is heading for a weekend scorcher, sparking warnings to take extra care during the heatwave.
Highs of 86F (30C) are forecast in parts of the country tomorrow before the mercury nudges 95F next week.
The Met Office, with Public Health England, has issued a level-2 heat health alert across much of England until Tuesday.
It predicts a 70 per cent chance of a heatwave, adding: “Very warm or hot conditions will spread north under high pressure over the weekend and into Monday, with trigger criteria likely to be met across most regions.”
Northern England and Scotland will turn slightly fresher next week while temperatures continue to climb elsewhere.
Highs of 95F are possible by Wednesday in the South, putting the 96.08F record for June set in 1976 under threat.
Health experts warn us to take extra care over the coming days while safety campaigners are urging people not to cool off in some open waters.
A St John Ambulance spokesman said: “Extreme heat can be dangerous, particularly for the very young and old, but by being prepared you can spot early warning signs of illness and care for someone who needs your help.
“Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are the most serious problems that can develop when temperatures soar, so it’s essential that people can spot the signs, such as headache and dizziness, and get them somewhere cool and rehydrated as soon as possible.”
Met Office “alert and readiness” heatwave warnings are triggered when temperatures hit 86F during the day without falling below 59F at night.
Forecaster Emma Sharples said Northern England and Scotland are likely to see temperatures up to 79F this weekend.
