Man held as WPC’s body found in lake
A MAN aged 43 was being questioned by detectives last night after the body of a policewoman was found in a lake early yesterday morning.
Police were called to Poynton Park in Cheshire at about 3.45am.
The victim is believed to be mother-of-three PC Leanne McKie, 39, who was serving with Greater Manchester Police.
Detectives said the man from Wilmslow had been arrested on suspicion of murder and was being held in police custody. Police cordons were in place in Poynton and Wilmslow last night as inquiries continued.
Detective Inspector Adam Waller said: “Investigations into her death are ongoing and we are working hard to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“We are aware of a number of rumours circulating in relation to the identity of the victim and, whilst formal identification has not yet taken place, we do believe that the victim is Leanne McKie, from Wilmslow.
“Leanne was a mother of three young children and a serving police officer in Greater Manchester Police. Our thoughts at this difficult time are with Leanne’s family, friends and colleagues.”
Mrs McKie lived with her husband, Darren, 43, and children George, 11, Tallulah, six, and Claudia, three. The doting mother took keen cricket fan George to matches and was a fan of Radio Two’s Jeremy Vine. She also raised money for research into brain tumours.
Mr McKie, a keen runner, worked as a sergeant in the Urmston and Partington neighbourhood policing team.
Police, who have appealed for witnesses, are not looking for anyone else.
