£75k fine for animal cremation fraudster
A CONWOMAN who dumped dead pets in a field despite being paid by their grieving owners to cremate them has been ordered to pay £75,000 by a court.
Emma Bent, 42, who ran Peak Pet Cremation was jailed in 2011 for eight months after dog corpses were uncovered.
Bent admitted charges relating to operating an unlicensed incinerator and the disposal of animal by-products and controlled waste.
Last year Bent, of Matlock, Derbyshire, was jailed for 2d years for swindling thousands of pounds in housing and council tax benefit and income support. The offences came to light during a probe into the original offence.
Her mother Sonia Lomas, of nearby Ilkeston, was given a nine-month suspended sentence for charges including money laundering and forgery.
Bent was this week told at Derby Crown Court to pay back £75,806.41 or face more jail if she does not pay within three months.
The money will be paid to the Department for Work and Pensions and two local councils.
