Lewis off balance

MERCEDES have a “fundamental issue” to resolve with Lewis Hamilton’s car after a painful practice at the Malaysian Grand Prix.

“The lap time is reality, the stopwatch always tells the truth. The lap time showed we are not quick enough,” said team boss Toto Wolff.

“The car seems to be unbalanced and that triggers an awful lot of consequences and it was certainly one of the worst Fridays I can remember.”

Hamilton is hoping they can come up with an overnight solution. The Briton, who leads the title race, was sixth in both practice sessions. “It’s been a very difficult day. I’ve been struggling with the car, so we have to try to understand where we’ve gone wrong with the balance,” said Hamilton. Wolff added: “There is a fundamental issue in the car that we need to find out. These things are very complex, so it can be a tiny detail that just unsettles the car.”
