Trim back the hedge? Rather yew than me...

-

A GARDENER puts the finishing touches to a giant yew hedge – four weeks after setting out to trim this big green colossus.

Armed with a cherry picker, shears and hedge trimmers, a three-man team began renovating the 300-year-old hedge growth at Raby Castle in County Durham last month.

The trio worked five days a week to complete the huge task, with the hedges an integral feature of the historical estate, a popular tourist attraction.

Rachel Makin, who works at Raby Castle, said: “The hedges are the most dominant feature of the garden. Visitors often comment on how impressive they are. We get lots of questions about why we cut them in strange shapes but people don’t realise they are like that naturally.”
