1st class! Girl, 6, helps postie save card
A GIRL aged six has helped a postman rescue a postcard which was posted to her grandmother in South Africa without a stamp.
Ella Grogan Weyman feared the note would never make it for her granny Ninni’s 70th birthday after her mother forgot to add the postage.
She took it on herself to write a handwritten letter to her local postie, asking him to find the postcard and fix a stamp to it, which she attached in an envelope.
The youngster stuck her note to the post box where the letter was posted and was delighted to hear her request had been answered by the postman, who they know only as Paul. She said: “I’m really, really happy the postman found my card to Ninni!”
“I think it’s brilliant that he managed to put the stamp on it, and want to say thank you to him. I think that Ninni will be so happy when she sees our card!”
The postcard, which Ella sent last week, was the sixth of 70 postcards she sent to her grandmother Felicity Grogan to celebrate her 70th birthday on November 23.
Mother Kathleen Grogan, 40, from Cambridge, said that her children Ella and Liam, nine, were “absolutely devastated” when they learned that the card might not reach South Africa.
This particular card had a postman on it and was designed to look like Penguin book covers. Kathleen said: “The kids were just devastated when I got home after we posted the card and I found the stamp in my wallet. Ella likes to help out and thought it would be a good idea to write a note to the postman – she was very hopeful.
“I really want to express my thanks to the postal service. It’s really sweet that they looked for the card. I honestly would really like to know how long it took them to find that one postcard.“
She has an idea of how hard it must have been. In 2000, Kathleen worked for the Royal Mail for a month.
