Jack corks his holiday plans

- TONY BANKS

JACK CORK was about to go on holiday with his family when the call came from Gareth Southgate.

Now the Burnley midfielder wants more.

Cork, 28, made his senior debut as a substitute in England’s draw with Germany at Wembley on Friday.

He has now played at every level for his country since being capped for the Under-16s. He turned out for Stuart Pearce’s Olympic team in 2012 too.

It seemed Cork’s chance had passed him by when last Tuesday, after a spate of withdrawals in the England camp, he got the call.

“I was about to go on holiday with the wife and kids when the gaffer called and said ‘do you want to come?’,” said Cork.

“I was going to Dubai – the family are over there now. They’ve taken my mum over to help with the kids. I told them to go because I didn’t think I’d feature on Friday. I thought there would be more chance against Brazil.

“There were other family members at Wembley, so there will be pictures.

“I’m sure my mum will be buzzing. She would have had a couple of drinks because she’d be nervous. They’ll be happy.” The son of former Wimbledon striker Alan Cork added: “Friday was amazing, one of the highlights of my career. Just to come out at Wembley, against Germany, in a big game and get on the pitch was a dream. When you’re a kid growing up playing in the garden, you want play at Wembley. I’m dead chuffed.

“I’ve played in League One, and in the Championship, I’ve put myself out there. I feel I’ve merited a chance and I’m happy the manager trusted me.”
