Rose West’s nephew jailed for child rape
SERIAL killer Rose West’s child rapist nephew ranted at a judge yesterday as he was jailed for 18 years after being convicted of aggravated burglary and the kidnap and rape of a girl of 12.
Steven Letts shouted and waved his arms as Judge Jamie Tabor QC sentenced him for the sex attack and also his part in a terrifying burglary during which a family were threatened with a machete.
The court had heard how the 39-yearold snatched the vulnerable schoolgirl off a Gloucester street after she rowed with a social worker during a trip out from the care home where she lived.
He took her to his home in the city, plied her with vodka, cocaine and cannabis, and then had sex with her.
The flat is a stone’s throw from Gloucester’s House of Horrors where his aunt Rose West and husband Fred killed and buried 10 young women in the 1960s and 1970s.
Letts denied abducting and raping the girl last March but was found guilty at Gloucester Crown Court. At a separate trial, he and another man were convicted of aggravated burglary at a house in the Tredworth area of the city in May last year.
Yesterday he refused to return to the dock and appeared via video link from jail. During sentencing, Letts became angry when Judge Tabor accused him of lying. His microphone was switched off but he continued to shout before storming out of the video suite.
Judge Tabor described the rapist as a “very volatile man, a compulsive liar and steeped in the use of drugs”.
