Gum care can save lives

TREAT­ING gum dis­ease may pre­vent a heart at­tack or stroke by low­er­ing blood pres­sure.

In­ten­sive treat­ment “sig­nif­i­cantly low­ered” blood pres­sure in at-risk Chi­nese pa­tients, ac­cord­ing to a study. Blood pres­sure was com­pared af­ter stan­dard and in­ten­sive treat­ment – clean­ing to the roots of the teeth un­der anaes­the­sia, an­tibi­otics and ex­trac­tions – at Sun Yat-sen Univer­sity in Guang­dong. Stan­dard treat­ment made no dif­fer­ence, ac­cord­ing to the find­ings pre­sented at the Amer­i­can Heart As­so­ci­a­tion’s Sci­en­tific Ses­sions in Cal­i­for­nia.
