to a female prison. Previously, they had quite rightly required the more rigorous proof of a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) or a doctor’s diagnosis of gender dysphoria.
Unsurprisingly, the European Convention on Human Rights was then used to overturn this in favour of a new policy which said that no GRC was needed and it was enough for anyone to claim a different gender to be taken seriously and placed in a prison environment of their choice.
What about the human rights of women suddenly threatened by the imposition of a dangerous male prisoner posing as woman but with male hormones coursing through his body? As always these days, it seems to be the minority that shouts the loudest that gets the most attention.
Sadly this Conservative Government seems to be too open to the latest fashionable issues, keen to jump on any bandwagon they think will endear them to the liberal elite. Lord knows why, these are not the people who vote for them.
It is extraordinary that Theresa May’s Government is seriously considering a Gender Recognition Act which would legitimise the process of gender self-identification. This flies in the face of all common sense and biological reality. Even after the process of surgical and hormonal reassignment, a
IT IS also the thin end of a very fat wedge in which the Western scientific method is being undermined by the politics of desire. If I wish it so, it is so, is not the basis for any rational political decision.
This is not the first time a male rapist has tried to exploit transgender claims to be sent to a female prison. In 2016 Davina Ayrton was convicted of raping a 15-year-old schoolgirl and yet, despite having no reassignment surgery, wanted to serve his eight-year sentence in a female prison.
Following the 2017 Ministry of Justice change in the rules it was widely feared his wish might be granted. In the same year male double-rapist Jessica Winfield was moved to a women’s jail after having a sex change.
It has been estimated that up to half of transgender prisoners might be sex offenders.
It is certainly right that the mental issues around transgenderism be treated with sensitivity but we should not allow our sympathy for the genuine anguish suffered by some people to be exploited by criminals who see our liberal society as a soft touch.
We should also not allow the bullying of a vociferous minority to drown out the legitimate concerns of women who fear that safe spaces reserved for them may well be invaded by men posing as women for sinister motives. Some women protesters have been physically attacked by transgender campaigners.
The legal requirements for transgender recognition should not be downgraded by government. It should not just be a case of donning a wig and giving yourself a female name. We all deserve more respect than that.
