Truly a hero of our time
JUST imagine going in to work knowing there was a near 50 per cent chance you would not come out again alive. To today’s generation such an action would be unimaginable.
And yet that is what George “Johnny” Johnson and his fellow Dambusters did, an act of heroism and bravery that echoes down the years to this day. Nineteen crews flew out that night; only 11 came back.
It is utterly inexplicable that Johnny, the last surviving Dambuster, has been overlooked for a knighthood when they seem to be thrown around like confetti elsewhere, but at least he will be honoured with a gala lunch.
The sacrifices that generation made must never be forgotten. We salute him with pride.
