New goal for Usain as he fires up his lightning bolt
FORMER world record sprinter Usain Bolt strikes his famous lightning bolt pose after scoring twice in his first football game yesterday. The 32-year-old Jamaican eight-time Olympic champion celebrated in style following his feat with Australia’s Central Coast Mariners team. He scored the third and fourth goals in a 4-0 win over Macarthur South West in a pre-season friendly for the A-League club. Bolt has teamed up with the club for an “indefinite training period” after retiring from the track last year. He said then his dream was to play professional football. After the match yesterday, he said: “Dreams become reality through hard work. “My first start and scoring two goals, it’s a good feeling. I’m keen to be a Mariner, to play my best and get into the team.”
He added: “I think I made some slight mistakes but I’m just happy to get the chance and I’m proud of myself.”
Scotland striker Ross McCormack, who is on loan from Aston Villa and headed in the Mariners’ first goal, was full of praise for the athlete.
He said: “The best thing about Usain Bolt is that he’s so humble.
“He’s fitted in well with the lads. From my first day even to where he is now, the transformation is huge.”
The 100m and 200m runner has already trained with a host of football sides including Borussia Dortmund, South Africa’s Sundowns and Norway’s Stromsgodset.
The Mariners have not yet revealed whether the Olympic legend will be offered a contract.
