UK CRIME BOSSES TAKE OVER MAFIA MARKETS
BRITISH crime bosses are exploiting gaps in the cocaine market to play a greater role in smuggling the drugs into the UK, an EU report has claimed.
The wholesale supply of the class-A drug was traditionally dominated by deals between cartels in Colombia, in South America, and Italian crime groups.
But the arrest of 84 members of a mafia-style crime group in Calabria last year has left the door open to British, Albanian, Dutch, French and Irish criminals to arrange their own transport.
“Comparatively small players are now using this direct access to producers and pooling funds to purchase larger quantities of cocaine at more favourable wholesale prices,” stated the Drug Markets Report, compiled with the help of Europol.
