‘Labour’s plans would lead to more killings’

Daily Express - - News - By Michael Knowles

HOME Secretary Priti Patel insisted last night the Conservatives are the only party who “will always back the police to do their jobs”.

Labour’s opposition to the stop-and-search practice would lead to more murders, shootings and stabbings, the Tories warned, because police will not be able to snare as many thugs carrying weapons.

The Tories also claimed more officers will be assaulted due to shadow home secretary Diane Abbott’s opposition to Tasers. She has said: “There is something inherently wrong with how Tasers are used.”

Yesterday, Ms Patel said: “Corbyn’s Labour would put the public at risk by refusing to give the police the political backing they need to fight violent crime.

“As the party of law and order, we will always back the police to do their jobs. The recruitment of 20,000 additional police officers is already underway and we are giving them the powers and kit they need to keep themselves and the public safe.

“With a Conservative majority we would introduce even tougher sentencing to ensure there’s absolutely no safe space for thugs to operate.”

The Tories say figures suggest fewer stops and searches would lead to one more murder a week. They also claim stop and search prevented 450 guns being fired last year.
