Tory is attacked on voter’s doorstep

Daily Express - - News - By Paul Jeeves

A PROSPECTIVE Tory MP has vowed to “continue” campaigning despite being the victim of what he claims was a verbal and physical assault while out canvassing.

Matt Vickers was knocking on doors in Ingleby Barwick near Stockton when a member of the public “screamed and shouted” a stream of obscenities before grabbing hold of him and preventing him from leaving.

He is in a tight battle for Stockton South in the North-east, attempting to overturn a slender 888 Labour majority held by Paul Williams in a seat also heavily targeted by the Brexit Party.

Mr Vickers, who has now reported the matter to Cleveland Police, said he “agreed to disagree” with the perpetrator when the incident turned physical.

He insisted “violence and intimidation” on any candidate had no place in politics and condemned the alleged incident as an “attack on democracy”. He added: “I totally condemn this type of behaviour, and will not let it deter me as we approach the final straight of the election campaign.”

Tight fight…Matt Vickers
