Trump blames Iran for attack on US embassy
IRAQI militiamen backed by Iran broke into the United States’ embassy compound in Baghdad yesterday.
Dozens of protesters got within 200 yards of the main building before US troops forced them back using tear gas.
Iraqi troops were suspected of complicity by allowing the protesters to pass through a security checkpoint into Baghdad’s Green Zone, where most embassies are located.
The attack was carried out in revenge for Sunday’s US air raids on the Iranianbacked militia Kataib Hezbollah which killed about 25 and wounded 51.
The raids were in retaliation for a Kataib Hezbollah rocket attack on an Iraqi base on Friday.
Iran branded the air raid as “terrorism” while Iraqi officials fumed about
America’s breach of Baghdad’s sovereignty.
Donald Trump yesterday blamed Iran for the embassy breach.
The US president tweeted: “Iran killed an American contractor, wounding many. We strongly responded, and always will.
“Now Iran is orchestrating an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. They will be held fully responsible.
“In addition, we expect Iraq to use its forces to protect the Embassy, and so notified!”
The demonstration took place after thousands of people attended the funerals of the militiamen killed by the US air strikes.
The marchers had gathered outside the embassy compound chanting “Down, Down USA!”, “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” and hurled water and stones over its walls.
They flew yellow militia flags, sprayed graffiti on the wall and windows and set fire to trailers used by security guards.
They then smashed the gates used by cars and dozens pushed into the embassy compound before US troops forced them back.
The Popular Mobilisation, a group of Iranian-backed Shia militias absorbed into the Iraqi Army, claimed that 20 protesters were wounded by live rounds and tear gas canisters.
● Somali Islamic extremists al-Shabaab yesterday claimed responsibility for a truck bomb in the capital, Mogadishu, that killed at least 79 people last week.
