Bennett: Positive test ‘not big deal’

- By Tony Banks

BLACKBURN captain Elliott Bennett and two Fulham players tested positive for Covid-19 in the latest round of testing in the Football League.

The EFL revealed last night that three of the 1,030 players and club officials tested on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were positive.

Rovers said that Bennett, 31, was “asymptomatic and feeling no ill-effects”.

Both Fulham players, who were unnamed, are self-isolating.

The news came after a Hull City player and staff member were confirmed to have the virus on Sunday after the previous round of testing. The club said last night that they have no new cases.

Blackburn said Bennett is due to return to training on June 5 providing he shows no symptoms. He said: “I feel fit and healthy. Hopefully, this sends out a positive message to the community that perhaps many people have or have had the virus without showing any effects.

“There seems to have been a lot of hysteria about footballers returning to training, but it’s not a big deal at all.”

CHELSEA were given a major boost when N’Golo Kante returned to training yesterday.

The France midfielder was given permission to miss training last week after expressing worries about his safety during the coronavirus crisis.

The 29-year-old’s brother Niama died of a heart attack in 2018 and his father died when Kante was aged just 11.
