Fearne Cotton And Martin Kemp

10AM, RADIO 2 Ricky Gervais is on the show to talk about the latest doings of his comic creation David Brent. Brent, it seems, has been living the dream, touring the country as the lead singer in a rock band. The singer, songwriter and record producer John Newman is also on the show.

The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner

2.30PM, RADIO 4 (FM) Alan Sillitoe grew up in poverty, his father was violent, and Sillitoe left school at 14. Sillitoe became one of the ‘angry young men’ writers; his works include Saturday Night And Sunday Morning, as well as this short story about a borstal boy who escapes the grimness of his life by long-distance running. These long periods of solitude give him time to reflect, with great bitterness, about the way the class system operates to keep him in his place. 3PM, BBC 6 MUSIC Gilles Peterson plays carnival music from across the world for this last bank holiday weekend of the summer. He’ll play music of all genres, and closes the show with a vivacious bravura performance by the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra.

Saturday Night At The Movies

5PM, CLASSIC FM Andrew Collins includes scores from the summer’s big films on his show today. He will include Thomas Newman’s soundtrack for Finding Dory, Michael Giacchino’s music for Star Trek Beyond, and tracks from the new Ghostbusters.

Hagen Quartet

6.30PM, RADIO 3 The Hagen Quartet will play Schubert’s ambiguous work of love and pain, the String Quartet In G Major. It was written as Schubert’s short life drew to a close, and was published posthumously.

BBC Proms 2016

7.30PM, RADIO 3 Ophelia only uses 481 words in the whole of Hamlet. The composer Hans Abrahamsen draws on those few words for an ethereal new piece of music called Let Me Tell You. Barbara Hannigan, who has a voice that Abrahamsen describes as ‘like singing in the sky’, gives the work its London premiere tonight.
