The Masque Of The Red Death (1964)

15 1PM, HORROR An Edgar Allan Poe adaptation as only cult director Roger Corman could film it, with Vincent Price chewing up the scenery as the satanic prince getting his comeuppanc­e. Bridge Of Spies (2015) 12 8PM, SKY PREMIERE The Coens had a hand in writing the script for Steven Spielberg’s Cold War tale, but this is no comedy. Tom Hanks plays a lawyer at a show trial, but it’s his defendant, Mark Rylance, who nabbed the Oscar out from under his nose.

(2010) 15 9PM, MORE4 In 2010 actioner Red, Helen Mirren played espionage for laughs, but in this intriguing political thriller, she plays it entirely straight. Mirren (above) is one of the former Mossad agents finding their past, and the truth about a botched mission, coming back to haunt them.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdom­e (1985)

15 10.40PM, ITV Mel Gibson’s Max is decidedly less angry in this second sequel – as denoted by that 15 certificat­e. The story is a bit of a left turn, too, with Max finding himself the saviour of hordes of displaced children in post-apocalypti­c limbo. I Am Number Four (2011) 12 11.55PM, BBC1 This sci-fi thriller is high on action, but it’s unabashedl­y low on coherent plot – which won’t bother its intended young-adult audience one little bit. Brit Alex Pettyfer is an alien dodging other aliens on Earth, but finding time somehow to fall for an amateur highschool photograph­er (Dianna Agron, right, whom you might remember from her role in Glee). Her (2013) 15 12.55AM, CH4 We’re in typically surreal territory with this oddball romance from Spike Jonze (of Being John Malkovich fame). Joaquin Phoenix (left) tops the cast as the loner who falls for his computer’s operating system (yes, really) – which brings a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘online dating’...
