The Forsytes Returns

2PM, RADIO 4 It’s 1924, and flighty young Fleur has put her rackety past behind her and tried to forget her love for Jon Forsyte. She throws herself into making her family and her devoted husband happy. Fleur, however, is a Forsyte and, though they are successful with power and money, happiness tends to elude them. Joseph Millson stars as Soames Forsyte and Jessica Raine is Fleur in this seven-part adaptation of John Galsworthy’s final Forsyte novels.

Jazz Record Requests

4PM, RADIO 3 Alyn Shipton will be going back in time today as part of the ongoing celebratio­ns to mark the 70th anniversar­y of the BBC Third Programme, the forerunner of Radio 3. He has asked listeners over the past few weeks to pick their favourite jazz recordings from 1946, and Alyn will feature them on today’s show, which comes live from London’s South Bank.

Saturday Night At The Movies

5PM, CLASSIC FM The Magnificen­t Seven ride again in the remake of the classic 1960 film, which was itself a remake of the Japanese film Seven Samurai. Andrew Collins plays music from the 1960 film and its 2016 version, plus tracks by Ennio Morricone.

6.15PM, RADIO 4 Petula Clark is on Clive Anderson’s show for a live performanc­e of songs from her new album, called From Now On. There’ll also be live music from The Allergies and Andy Cooper, plus conversati­on from Ross Kemp and Jeffery Kissoon.

The Villain In Six Chapters

8PM, RADIO 4 Toby Jones, with the use of archive material, tells a six-part story of fictional villains. He comes up with some fine examples of cads, bounders, femmes fatales and evildoers, and wonders why we are so attracted to them. He also looks at some recent wrong ’uns, including Tony Soprano and Breaking Bad’s Walter White.
