MATTHEW JUKES’ WINE LIST
This week’s killer deals include a spicy red and a fabulously fruity port
1
2015 La Piuma, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Italy
£7.79, reduced to £5.79 until 24 January, Waitrose
I’m a big fan of this medium-weight red, and at less than £6 it’s unmissable.
Honed, smooth, mellow and rewarding, it’s delicious with a wide range of dishes, so load up today.
2
2015 Masseria Pietrosa Verdeca, Puglia, Italy
£8, Morrisons
Made from the littleknown verdeca grape, whose hallmarks are high acidity and floral, taut fruit, this fascinating white is stunning with oily or creamy dishes, where it slices through the flavours without getting bogged down.
3
2015 Domaine Coudoulet, Viognier, Languedoc, France
£10.50, Oddbins
You may already have gathered that I’m fussy about viognier, despising soapy, confected versions while praising elite ones such as this. It’s best paired with main-course fish dishes – a creamy fish pie would be an ace match.
4 2014 Vinsobres, Les Cornuds, Famille Perrin, Southern Rhône, France
£8.99, Co-op Spicy, butch and a little on the gruff side, this wine is blocky and robust and therefore requires hefty, meaty dishes with which to spar. You have to be a fan of powerful reds if you want to sink your teeth into this grenache/syrah blend.
5 2014 Domaine Les Yeuses, Les Epices Syrah, Pays d’Oc, France
£8.99, reduced to £7.99 each in a ‘mix six’ deal until 30 January, Majestic ‘Epice’ is French for ‘spice’ and this is the most peppery and aromatic wine of the moment. It’s bargainpriced and perfect with game, beef and lamb.
