Historical drama in which Judi Dench plays Queen Victoria and Billy Connolly plays her loyal Balmoral attendant John Brown – a servant, but also a friend to the lonely widowed monarch. Stunning performances – subtle, not mannered – help to make this intriguing and touching.

Sigourney Weaver, Robert De Niro and Cillian Murphy are strong leads, so it’s a shame this doesn’t add up. In a paranoid world where physics, psychology, supernatural phenomena and trickery intersect, Weaver and Murphy come up against De Niro’s blind psychic showman.
