CASTING FOR THE BARD-IN BRONZE

Daily Mail Weekend Magazine - - SAVE OUR ARTS AND CRAFTS -

This life- size clay figure of William Shakespeare was sculpted by Hayley Gibbs for the site of The Theatre at Shoreditch, where the Bard’s early plays were staged.

With fellow sculptor Raphael Maklouf, Hayley visited the Royal Shakespeare Company to pick out a historically accurate costume for her Elizabethan subject. The figure was moulded in clay and then cast in bronze, with intense attention to every detail – Shakespeare’s ruff, for example, is smaller than we might imagine it, but this carefully reflects Elizabethan fashions.
