Five ‘classics’ this week – all perfect examples of their famous and international styles

- MATTHEW JUKES’

2019 VINUS BY PAUL MAS, MALBEC DU LANGUEDOC, FRANCE

£8.25, reduced to £7 until Tuesday, Morrisons

It is such a joy to perfectly match a wine to a recipe, and I’ve been doing this for more than two decades in Weekend. But it has occurred to me that this epic, sensual and heartwarming malbec paired with the Lamb Kebabs With Feta & Mint Dip is as close to gastro-heaven as it gets.

2019 TESCO FINEST CÔTES DE PROVENCE ROSÉ, FRANCE

£9, Tesco

It is easy to find decent Provençal rosé for over £15 per bottle, but under a tenner is a more challenging task. Tesco has stepped up to the mark with this crisp, pert, floral number, and it has not covered up any flaws with sugar as with so many of its rivals’ wines. Drink this with the Summer Seafood Paella.

2019 LA MARINIÈRE MUSCADET, DROUET FRÈRES,LOIRE,FRANCE

£6.49, Waitrose

This white wine is absolutely spot on, and it is indeed the epitome of Muscadet. There is lemon zest, apple skin and sea salt aplenty in this bone-dry, slender wine, and it is a dream partner when paired with fresh seafood.

2019 M&S CLASSICS, NO.3 GAVI, PIEMONTE, ITALY

£8, Marks & Spencer

This bottle is a very good stab at Piemonte’s most famous dry white wine style, Gavi. Made by the ever-reliable Araldica winery, this wine is aromatic, crunchy and as bright as a button. This all makes it a rather fetching aperitif style white wine.
