MATT MONRO (1930-1985). The Lon­don­born bus driver, real name Terry Par­sons, be­came one of Bri­tain’s finest bal­ladeers with songs such as From Rus­sia With Love and Born Free. Bea­tles pro­ducer Ge­orge Martin said Monro, known as the Man with the Golden Voice, was the best singer he ever worked with. MARIE TUS­SAUD ( 1761- 1850). The Stras­bourg-born wax mod­eller came to Bri­tain dur­ing the French Revo­lu­tion and be­gan tour­ing the coun­try with her wax­work col­lec­tion, be­fore open­ing a per­ma­nent dis­play in Lon­don. Years ear­lier, her head had been shaved in prepa­ra­tion for the guil­lo­tine, but she was saved by one of the French Rev­o­lu­tion­ary lead­ers who knew her.
