KNACKERED MOTHERS’ WINE CLUB
BARGAIN OF THE WEEK
louis roederer brut Premier NV (£29.99, normally £39.99, Waitrose) NEED bubbles for Father’s Day? Here’s one of the best big-name Champagne bargains.
This house grows most of its own grapes — unlike many others who buy them in. Gorgeousness in every sip.
WHITE
mineralstein riesling 2014 (£10, marks & spencer) I KNOW Riesling can be tricky — particularly if you’ve no idea if what you are about to drink is going to be bone dry or sickly sweet. But fear not.
This is a peachy, lemony gem with just a hint of spice. It’s floral and fresh, too. And made in the Pfalz region of Germany, it’s a real summery wine.
FOOD PAIRING: Sushi.
RED
la rosine syrah 2013 (£20.95, bbr.com) EXPENSIVE, but a real treat (another Father’s Day option), this sumptuous Syrah is from the Cote Rotie, in France’s northern Rhone Valley.
As the name tells us, the slope on which the vineyards lie is roasted by the sun in the summer months, producing super-ripe grapes with lots of flavour and wine with character. Rich, spicy and cherry-filled.
FOOD PAIRING: Steak and chips.
FORTIFIED
Tio Pepe en rama 2016, (£16.95, lea & sandeman) MORE than 50 independent wine shops in the UK are running a sherry festival this week (for details, go to sherry.wine).
If you haven’t experienced the drama of en rama, prepare to have your mind blown by an unfined, unfiltered (basically raw) Fino sherry.
Enter stage left this one from Tio Pepe: nutty, yeasty, salty and sublime.
FOOD PAIRING:
Iberico ham.
