Charley’s model performance

In contention: Hull CHARLEY HULL looked like the ‘Pied Piper of Woburn’ as she treated her fans to another sparkling exhibition to move into contention at the Ricoh Women’s British Open. The 20-year-old British No 1, who is playing on her home course, delighted family and friends by firing a 70 in the second round, including a run of five birdies in six holes from the seventh. Rory McIlroy caused controversy before the Open at Royal Troon two weeks ago when he said of his Olympic withdrawal: ‘I didn’t get into golf to get other people into the game.’ But Hull clearly takes a different view. Asked if she sees herself as having a key role in inspiring youngsters to take up the game, she said: ‘Yeah, I do, because I’m one of the young English players coming up. I feel like I am a major role model. It’s a good feeling. It is part of being a professional, to get people into the game.’ Hull played alongside Lydia Ko on Woburn’s Marquess course and her five-under-par total of 139 was five strokes better than the world No 1 from New Zealand. Hull trails leader Mirim Lee by six shots after the Korean added a 71 to her first-round 62. Scotland’s Catriona Matthew is nine under after an impressive 65 yesterday.
