Another Phil joins the elite
AMONG 54 Britons on the Forbes rich list is new entry Philip Day, the man behind clothing chain Edinburgh Woollen Mill.
The 51-year-old – worth £810million – grew up on a Stockport council estate where his parents ran a newsagents.
He began work at textile firm Coats Group and at 28 was headhunted by retailer Aquascutum. In 2001 the married father-of-three led a manage- ment buyout of Edinburgh Woollen Mill, which has about 1,000 stores. In a recent interview he said: ‘It is not about building a mighty empire, it’s just about the job and being part of the economy and doing our best for Britain.’
Mr Day lives in a Tudor-style home near Brampton, Cumbria, and enjoys shooting duck and pheasant. He has sat on the board of Carlisle United FC.
