An­other Phil joins the elite

AMONG 54 Bri­tons on the Forbes rich list is new en­try Philip Day, the man be­hind cloth­ing chain Ed­in­burgh Woollen Mill.

The 51-year-old – worth £810mil­lion – grew up on a Stock­port coun­cil es­tate where his par­ents ran a newsagents.

He be­gan work at tex­tile firm Coats Group and at 28 was head­hunted by re­tailer Aquas­cu­tum. In 2001 the mar­ried fa­ther-of-three led a man­age- ment buy­out of Ed­in­burgh Woollen Mill, which has about 1,000 stores. In a re­cent in­ter­view he said: ‘It is not about build­ing a mighty em­pire, it’s just about the job and be­ing part of the econ­omy and do­ing our best for Bri­tain.’

Mr Day lives in a Tu­dor-style home near Bramp­ton, Cum­bria, and en­joys shoot­ing duck and pheas­ant. He has sat on the board of Carlisle United FC.
