Daily mugs of cocoa could soothe achy legs
DRINKING cocoa could ease the leg pain caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD).
This is where a build-up of fatty deposits in the blood vessels in the legs restricts blood flow to muscles, causing pain, especially when walking.
In a trial at Northwest- ern University in Illinois, U.S., 44 men and women with PAD will have three cocoa-based drinks a day for six months. Previous medical research has shown that epicatechin, an antioxidant in cocoa, helps improve blood flow by dilating blood vessels.
