THE zombie insurer Phoenix Group saw its boss pocket £2.8m – despite it suffering a £128m loss.

Clive Bannister, 58, picked up a £700,000 base salary in 2016, along with £16,000 in benefits and £123,000 towards his pension. He also trousered £1.1m under a longterm bonus plan.

And despite the drop in earnings at Phoenix, his annual bonus actually rose from £861,000 to £883,000.

Bannister, who is married and has three sons, saw his overall pay packet drop by £73,000 from 2015.
