Time to get the sunglasses out

-

AT LAST! The weather has finally warmed up, with welcome high pressure and sunshine breaking through.

Temperatures are expected to keep rising until Saturday, so it’s a wise idea to stay sun savvy, by making sure we have sunscreen handy, as well as sunglasses that offer good protection against the damaging effect of ultraviolet (UV) light.

Although it’s important to protect your skin, some direct exposure to the sun is essential for the production of vitamin D.

Age UK advises going outside once or twice every day without sunscreen for short periods in the summer, without letting your skin burn. The more of your skin that is exposed, the better your chance of making enough vitamin D.

There are a few food sources of vitamin D — salmon, sardines and other oily fish, eggs and fortified spreads — but sunshine is the major source.

The Government recommends vitamin D supplements for some groups of the population, including people aged 65 and over. But always speak to your GP before taking a vitamin supplement on a daily basis.

As the weather warms up, it’s time to think about other ways to enjoy being outdoors. A mobility scooter or adapted car could open up many possibilities, from trips to country shows to holidays abroad.

And if you enjoy your garden, there are outdoor stairlifts that make access far easier if there are steps involved.

Changing your bathroom or having a stairlift or lift fitted is also more appealing at this time of year, when leaving the door open for fitters won’t cause a draught.
