COURT

-

of Appeal judges have ruled that doctors can stop providing life support treatment to baby Charlie Gard. As sad as this is, surely sensible folk must agree that they have reached the right decision.

His parents appealed against last month’s court ruling that would allow specialists to move their eight-monthold son to palliative care. Chris Gard and Connie Yates had raised £1.3 million to send him to the U.S. for a trial treatment — which promised no cure.

Their son has a mitochondrial disease which saps energy from his organs and muscles and has left him blind, deaf, with little brain function and unable to breathe without a ventilator.

His lungs will never work properly and his prognosis has never been good. When doctors said there was little hope, his mother called them liars. The wrenching emotion of these caring parents was awful to behold.

Now I hope they can cherish the time the three of them have left together, in peace and comfort.
