Winter storms home
AIDAN O’BRIEN’S domination of the 2017 Classics continued at the Curragh yesterday when Winter routed her rivals in the Tattersalls 1,000 Guineas.
Coming just 24 hours after Churchill’s victory in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, the 8-13 favourite was even more impressive than when landing the English equivalent at Newmarket three weeks ago.
The daughter of Galileo displayed a sparkling turn of foot for rider Ryan Moore to quicken clear of stablemates Roly Poly and Hydrangea and register a historic 1-2-3 for O’Brien.
Moore said: ‘She gave me a lovely ride and it was very straightforward. I couldn’t be more impressed by her. She was relentless and kept building all the way to the line. It rode like a piece of work. I can’t see any reason why she won’t carry on progressing.’
Meanwhile, Diore Lia, the 1,000-1 outsider for Saturday’s Investec Derby, will be ridden by inexperienced apprentice Gina Mangan, who has yet to partner a winner in 34 rides.
