JOHN Webber and his granddaughter Poppy, 7, are pictured being dwarfed by one of our tallest submissions. His wife Elizabeth, 75, has tended a remarkable selection of plants with her tallest standing in excess of 20ft – the length of a killer whale.

Mrs Webber credits her prize blooms to the near- sub tropical cli- mate in Dale, Pembrokeshire, with her garden bordering the shore.

But she doesn’t give her beasts special care. Her biggest problem is keeping them under control. Mrs Webber said: ‘If I do not spray the paths regularly, then the house would disappear. One would need a cherry picker to measure accurately.’
