Saved by a barricade of beer kegs

-

BAR staff in a Borough Market pub saved the lives of more than 50 drinkers by barricading the doors with beer kegs.

Their quick-thinking actions stopped the three terrorists, who were armed with knives dripping with blood, from breaking into the Wheatsheaf pub on Saturday night.

Phillip Taylor, 26 was enjoying a drink with a friend as the horror unfolded.

The IT worker, from Canning Town, east London, said: ‘The first thing I noticed was staff putting kegs up against the door and bolting the front doors, gate and side entrance. The barrels were piled high.’

As terrified drinkers waited inside the pub, two of the terrorists banged on the glass, inches from Mr Taylor. ‘I looked out to the left and could see two guys with knives,’ he said. ‘They were covered in blood.’

Fifteen minutes later, the pub was evacuated. Mr Taylor praised the bar workers’ actions, saying: ‘The staff were absolutely incredible – if anyone had left they would almost certainly have been stabbed.’
