Dame Judi: I can no longer read scripts or watch TV
DAME Judi Dench has revealed that her eyesight has become so ‘appalling’ that she has to be taught scripts and cannot read or watch TV.
The 82-year-old actress said both of her eyes were now affected by macular degeneration and that doctors ‘can’t do anything’ to help her.
More than 600,000 people in the UK are affected by the agerelated form of the condition, which leads to loss of eyesight.
During a talk in London, Dame Judi struggled to make out members of the audience asking questions and referred to her poor eyesight on several occasions.
She said: ‘I can’t read at all now, not at all. So someone has to teach me the script now.
‘For instance, if eight actors were going to come in here to read you a sonnet, they would have one piece of paper and I would have 14. It’s very difficult.’
And when the issue of nudity on TV was later raised, she replied: ‘You ask the wrong person because I can’t see.’
When Dame Judi revealed she had the condition in 2012, it affected one eye, but she confirmed this week that it has since spread to both.
