UNKNOWN BRIT’S GLORY

- KIERAN GILL reports from Surbiton

YOUNG Brit Cameron Norrie staked his claim for a Wimbledon wildcard yesterday when he beat world No 71 Malek Jaziri in his first week as a professional. The 21-year-old (below) triumphed 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 at the Aegon Surbiton Trophy. Norrie was born in South Africa, but brought up by British parents in New Zealand, before he moved to London as a teenager. He has been studying sociology in Texas but is now in line for a dream chance of playing at SW19. ‘Having come straight out of college, it would be a big change for me,’ said Norrie, who is ranked 243 in the world. ‘It’s such a prestigious tournament, it would be a dream come true. If I’m playing in the qualifying (for Wimbledon) then I’ll battle through the matches. ‘That’s my highestranked win. It’s a good start to my professional career.’ Norrie later lost 6-4, 7-6 to Ukrainian Serhiy Stakhovsky. Meanwhile, Britain’s Davis Cup hero James Ward made his comeback from a knee injury that had kept him out for nine months, but lost 6-3, 6-1 to fellow Brit Dan Evans in the first round.
