Man at the window is rescued after 12 hours

- By Chris Greenwood

A DISABLED man seen desperately waving from his 11th-floor flat was finally rescued yesterday – 12 hours after the building went up in flames.

The pensioner, believed to be in his 70s, was feared dead by many as his plight was broadcast worldwide.

Good Morning Britain broadcast footage of him waving a jumper to attract attention as he cried out for help. He was also seen praying.

Just two storeys above his apartment, the fire could be seen raging, with flames and thick black smoke billowing from the windows. But shortly after noon yesterday, the man was seen being carried from the ruins on a stretcher surrounded by firemen.

The exhausted victim was shielded from falling debris by a phalanx of police officers holding plastic riot shields. Relatives said the man, who is yet to be identified, was partially blind and had lived in the Grenfell tower block for more than 30 years.
