Bayliss: We’ll peak in 2019

- PAUL NEWMAN

TREVOR BAYLISS is confident England will reach their peak for the 2019 World Cup despite their crushing Champions Trophy disappointment. Semi-final defeat by underdogs Pakistan means England are still without a global title in 19 attempts over the longer limited-overs distance but the head coach brought in with the white-ball in mind insists they remain on course. ‘We are building up to that World Cup,’ said Bayliss after the eight-wicket thrashing in Cardiff. ‘I know you had us as Trophy favourites but that wasn’t the opinion of the team nor me. ‘We were disappointed but we reached the semi-finals — and that’s probably about right for us at the moment.’ Bayliss also said Jos Buttler is still in contention for the first Test against South Africa on July 6 despite being selected for England’s three match Twenty20 series next week.
